instead of relying on the (easy and totally acceptable) "auto" function on my camera, i'm working on actually figuring out how to use the other options (which, apparently, will make me a better photographer -- funny, i'm actually getting worse using the manual settings...so apologies, but you get what you get for a little while).

Good for stepping out of the Auto function zone. Do you shoot in .RAW format or .JPEG?
i'm shooting RAW (although i have it set to capture both). i've taken a lot of very dark photos recently...
It takes a bit to get the hang of it...
